Redesigned Furniture, treasure hunting

Thrifting this weekend? Do the shake test.

We’ve all been there: the thrill of the hunt at the thrift store, a potential treasure catches your eye – a vintage armchair, a charming side table. Visions of weekend DIY projects and a perfectly restored piece dance in your head. But hold on, there’s one crucial step before you race to the checkout with your newfound gem – the shake test.

The shake test is a simple yet powerful tool in the thrifted furniture game. It helps you assess the structural integrity of a piece, saving you from potential headaches (and pain-in-the-butt repairs) as part of your project. Here’s why the shake test is your ultimate thrifting BFF:

  • Avoids Hidden Nightmares: Loose joints, weak glue, and hidden cracks can all be lurking beneath a piece’s charming exterior. A good shake test exposes these underlying issues, preventing you from buying a project that gently nudges you towards becoming firewood.
  • Sets Realistic Expectations: That wobbly chair might seem like a quick fix, but extensive repairs can quickly add up in terms of time and materials. The shake test helps you determine if the project is within your skillset and budget.
  • Peace of Mind (and a Sturdy Piece): A solid shake test translates to a future filled with confident use and reliable storage solutions. Imagine the satisfaction of using your thrifted masterpiece without fear of imminent collapse!

How to Shake Test Like a Pro:

  1. Get a Grip: Gently but firmly grasp the furniture at opposite ends, ensuring a good hold.
  2. Give it a Wiggle: Without yanking or jerking, gently rock the piece back and forth.
  3. Listen Up: Creaking, groaning, or excessive movement are red flags. Tight furniture should have minimal wobble.
  4. Inspect Further: Look for visible cracks, loose joints, or uneven legs that contribute to the wobble.
  5. Find out if there’s an easy fix: an EASY fix is if you can visibly reach screws on the bottom of your piece where the leg joints are that are part of the problem. If you can, a quick fix could be to simply tighten them. If it’s put together by glue and the glue has become weak or dried up, you might be looking at a more difficult fix.

Another possible easy fix is uneven leg bottoms. Could be as simple as adding a little pad to the bottom of the leg(s) that are uneven to raise them up a bit.
This coffee table had wobbly legs. But it was an easy fix by tightening the leg screws.

Remember: The shake test isn’t a deal-breaker for every piece. Some minor repairs are to be expected. But if you could identify why a wobble is happening and if it’s an easy fix BEFORE you drop the money, you’ll save yourself a headache and extra work.

So next time you’re at the thrift store, don’t be shy – give that furniture a little shake. Your future self will thank you!

Imagine it…differently. And be smart about what you bring home!
